A major rehabilitation of the San Bernardino DMV involves extensive site features, day lighting, interior furnishings and finishes. A monumental signage feature screens the entry facade from adjacent parking, providing seating, lighting, sound, planting, trellis, water vapor misting and topiary structure. The addition of two new clerestories provides north light that extends to the full depth of the public interior space. These clerestories interlock volumetrically, further articulating the reflected light. The daily problem of long queues is solved by paved serpentine queuing paths through landscaped areas. Branching columnar topiary structures populate the east and south serpentine paths, providing micro-climate enhancements similar to the signage feature. A kiosk reflecting the geometry of the clerestories anchors the interior casework. A full-height, full-length digital graphic of abstracted blades of grass, similar to the exterior columnar elements, serves as a bold backdrop to counters and open office system partition systems, whose finishes reflect the planting theme and presenting large scale furnishing elements to its visitors. |
